This print combines two enduring motifs in Japanese visual culture: the boy riding an ox — an image with roots in Zen ox-herding pictures (jūgyūzu) and Chinese pastoral painting — and the silhouette of Mount Fuji, a recurring subject in [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e). The composition would typically place the boy and ox in the foreground or middle distance, with Fuji rendered in flat color blocks and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradients along its slopes. The pairing evokes pastoral calm and a child's untroubled relationship with the natural world, themes Gekko returned to throughout his career. As a self-taught artist working in the Meiji period, Gekko frequently drew on classical motifs while filtering them through a more naturalistic Meiji sensibility. The image fits within his broader interest in everyday and rural subjects that complemented his warrior and historical prints. Standard mokuhanga production using [washi](/glossary/washi) paper and [baren](/glossary/baren)-burnished pigments would render the soft transitions of the mountain and the textured forms of the ox.
