Description

The seven flowers and plants of autumn (aki no nanakusa) are a canonical grouping in Japanese poetry and seasonal imagery: hagi (bush clover), susuki (silver grass), kudzu, nadeshiko (pink), ominaeshi (patrinia), fujibakama (eupatorium), and kikyo (balloon flower). This kacho-e composition brings these seven plants together in an arrangement that references both the classical literary tradition and the observational botanical print. Gekko's handling of plant subjects shows his ability to organize visually diverse botanical forms into a coherent composition, with the varied textures of leaves, flower heads, and grasses requiring distinct printing techniques — fine line work for grasses, soft color fields for flower petals. The seasonal specificity of the subject places this print firmly in autumn, a season particularly charged with elegiac feeling in Japanese aesthetics, making it both a nature study and an emotional statement.
