Description
From Gekko's Fujin fuzoku tsukushi series — an exhaustive survey of women's customs and manners — this print depicts suashi-mairi, the practice of barefoot pilgrimage to a shrine or temple. A bijin shown unshod on a devotional journey carries both spiritual and visual weight: the exposed feet against cold stone or ground contrast with the elaborate layering of her kimono, and the austere act of religious devotion is set against the richly patterned textile that identifies her social position. Gekko's women's customs series approached its subjects with ethnographic breadth, documenting gestures and practices that defined femininity in Meiji Japan. Compositionally, the figure would likely be rendered at three-quarter view, the kimono's textile patterns reproduced through skilled woodblock carving and multiple pigment applications, with the overall palette calibrated to suggest season and setting.
