Description

Inari Mountain (Inariyama) is associated with the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine network and its tutelary deity, who presides over smithcraft, harvests, and foxes. A swordsmith establishing a forge near such a site invokes the tradition of ritually consecrated blade-making: nihontô (Japanese sword) production required spiritual purity, and smiths frequently dedicated their work at Inari shrines. Gekkô's print likely depicts a smith at work at the forge, with fire illuminating his figure and tools in a dramatically lit interior or outdoor setting against the forested mountain. The presence of the Inari association may appear through architectural details—torii gate, fox statues—or landscape background elements. Gekkô trained in traditional figure composition and would have rendered the smith's posture and implements with attention to craft accuracy. The subject addresses the valorization of skilled artisanship (shokunin) prominent in Meiji-period cultural discourse, framing traditional craft practice as a living inheritance within a rapidly modernizing society.
