Description

This Gekkô print depicts the Shinto creation narrative from the Kojiki (712 CE): the primordial deity pair Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto standing on the Ame-no-ukihashi (Floating Bridge of Heaven), stirring the formless ocean below with the jeweled spear Ame-no-nuboko to form the first island, Onogoro-shima. Gekkô treated mythological subjects within the broader Meiji-period project of visualizing Japanese national origin narratives in popular print form. The composition likely shows the two deities on an arching bridge or cloud formation, in formal divine attire, directing the spear downward toward the roiling sea surface below. The subject demands a vertical compositional logic, with the heavenly realm above and the primordial ocean beneath, the deities mediating between the two. This variant (distinguished as -2) likely represents a different state, edition, or printing date from the companion design, with possible differences in palette, compositional framing, or format size distinguishing the two.
