Description
The Theatre print—depicting the interior or exterior of a kabuki performance space—was among the genre subjects that complemented Gekko's warrior and bijin-ga works with observation of popular entertainment culture. The kabuki theater's architectural splendor, its multiple levels of audience seating and the elaborate stage machinery, as well as the social theater of the audience itself—everyone visible to everyone else—gave him a subject of social density uncommon in his more focused figure studies.
