Description

Two mounted figures traverse a mountain pass while Mount Fuji appears in the upper register through bands of atmospheric mist. Gekko renders this travel scene with confident brushwork translated into restrained woodblock line and color, characteristic of his mature Meiji-period landscapes. The mist obscuring the middle ground — likely achieved through gradated bokashi printing — creates spatial depth while positioning Fuji as backdrop rather than focal point. The riders, possibly samurai retainers or wealthy travelers, provide human scale against the mountain scenery. This print belongs to the meisho-e tradition of travel imagery that Gekko interpreted through a more Western-influenced pictorial framework, with natural atmospheric recession replacing the flattened decorative patterning of earlier ukiyo-e landscape prints. The placement of Fuji behind cloud and mist, rather than in clear silhouette, reflects the Meiji-era interest in depicting the mountain under varied meteorological conditions rather than as a static emblem.
