Description
The autumn leaf viewing print—momijigari—depicted one of Japan's most celebrated seasonal rituals: the excursion into mountain or garden landscapes to observe the color change of maple leaves, a practice as socially elaborate as cherry blossom viewing. The viewer approaching or seated among the colored foliage, the leaves in their various stages of red and gold against the green of pine and the grey of stone, gave Gekko a subject of intense seasonal color that allowed full deployment of Meiji-era printing technology's chromatic range.
