Description
Gekko produced multiple designs depicting the wisteria spectacle at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, and this meisho-e is one of at least two distinct compositions on the subject. The celebrated wisteria arbors at Kameido, blooming in late April and early May, drew large crowds and had been a fixture of meisho-e print subjects since the Edo period. This landscape-oriented composition would emphasize the setting over individual figures, depicting the pendant purple-blue flower clusters cascading from overhead trellises with careful graduated bokashi to suggest depth within the clusters. The pond below might reflect the blossoms, and the arched drum bridge would likely serve as a structural anchor in the middle ground. Gekko's technical handling of wisteria, with fine key-block lines tracing each pendant cluster and layered blues and purples building the dense color of the flowers, demonstrates the precision that distinguished his landscape prints within the competitive Meiji publishing market.
