Description
Birds of Paradise is an undated shin-hanga kacho-e (bird-and-flower print) by Ohara Koson, signed Shoson. The title refers to the bird-of-paradise flower (strelitzia) or, in some readings, to exotic foreign birds; in either reading, the design follows Koson's habit of pairing a single biological subject with judiciously chosen botanical or atmospheric context. The print is recorded through the ukiyo-e.org image database. Koson's career under the Shoson signature was closely tied to the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo and to the broader shin-hanga revival, which sought to renew traditional ukiyo-e production through coordinated work between artist, block carver, printer, and publisher. Within that system, Koson became the leading specialist in bird-and-flower subjects. Birds of Paradise applies his familiar grammar: a small, focused composition placed against a generously empty ground, color held within a restrained natural palette, and silhouette carrying most of the design's weight. The carving captures the splayed, fan-like petals or showy plumage that gives the print its title, while bokashi gradations soften the ground and provide subtle atmospheric depth. The print belongs to the broad swath of Koson designs that found their primary market in Europe and the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, where shin-hanga kacho-e were collected as a refined, modern continuation of the older ukiyo-e tradition.
