Description
Hill Myna on a Magnolia Branch, dated 1928, is a refined example of Ohara Koson's mature shin-hanga kacho-e (bird-and-flower prints) produced under the publishing arrangements that defined his middle period. Working at this point under the art name Shoson, Koson had moved away from his earlier Meiji-era output and aligned himself with the revivalist shin-hanga movement, which sought to renew traditional ukiyo-e techniques through partnership between artist, carver, printer, and publisher. The composition is built around a single hill myna perched on a slender magnolia branch, its glossy black plumage relieved by the bright yellow patches at the eye and beak. Koson silhouettes the bird against an undifferentiated pale ground, a compositional habit he borrowed from Kano-school bird-and-flower painting and from his teacher Suzuki Kason. The magnolia blossoms, half-open and rendered in soft cream and ivory tones, anchor the lower portion of the sheet, while the bare branch describes a quiet diagonal that organizes the empty space. The print is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, which preserves an extensive group of Ohara Koson bird-and-flower prints from this period. As a sheet, it shows the technical hallmarks that made Koson's work so prized by Western collectors in the interwar years: meticulous registration, subtle gradations of black ink achieved through bokashi printing, and a restrained palette that prizes accuracy of observation over decorative excess. Hill Myna on a Magnolia Branch is a characteristic late-period Shoson kacho-e, balancing close ornithological description with the meditative, contemplative spaciousness that distinguishes his bird-and-flower prints from louder modernist contemporaries.
