Monkey Reaching for Moon by Ohara Koson illustrates one of East Asia's most famous Buddhist parables in the compact format of a shin-hanga kacho-e print. A macaque clings precariously to a branch above water, stretching its paw toward the moon's reflection on the surface below. The image draws from a well-known story in Zen tradition in which monkeys, mistaking the lunar reflection for the moon itself, attempt to grasp the illusion and fall to their deaths — a parable about the spiritual error of confusing appearance with reality. Koson renders the scene with characteristic economy: a few sweeping branches, the curve of the monkey's body, and the disc of moonlight floating on otherwise undisturbed water.
