Description

Monkey Reaching for Moon by Ohara Koson illustrates one of East Asia's most famous Buddhist parables in the compact format of a shin-hanga kacho-e print. A macaque clings precariously to a branch above water, stretching its paw toward the moon's reflection on the surface below. The image draws from a well-known story in Zen tradition in which monkeys, mistaking the lunar reflection for the moon itself, attempt to grasp the illusion and fall to their deaths — a parable about the spiritual error of confusing appearance with reality. Koson renders the scene with characteristic economy: a few sweeping branches, the curve of the monkey's body, and the disc of moonlight floating on otherwise undisturbed water. The composition's diagonal tension between the reaching animal and the unreachable reflection creates psychological depth uncommon in conventional bird-and-flower work, demonstrating why Koson is regarded as the master who expanded kacho-e beyond decorative naturalism. The print was produced within the shin-hanga publishing network spearheaded by Watanabe Shozaburo, who recognized Koson's talent and commissioned hundreds of designs from him between roughly 1910 and the 1930s. Watanabe's workshop maintained the traditional division of labor — designer, carver, printer, publisher — that distinguished shin-hanga from the contemporaneous sosaku-hanga (creative print) movement. The image is documented via the ukiyo-e.org aggregator. Monkey Reaching for Moon appeals to collectors interested in Koson's narrative range as well as those drawn to Zen iconography, and it stands as one of the most philosophically loaded compositions in his otherwise serene oeuvre.
