Description
This kacho-e print depicts a bullfinch (uso) perched on a slender branch, a subject Koson returned to repeatedly across his career. The bullfinch, with its distinctive rose-pink throat and grey plumage, is rendered with the close ornithological observation that defined Koson's mature work, likely shown in profile against an unmodulated background to isolate the bird as the sole focal point. The plumage would be built up through layered impressions, with bokashi gradation softening the transition between the rose breast and the slate-grey back and crown. The branch, often a flowering plum or pine in Koson's bullfinch compositions, is typically drawn with sparse calligraphic economy. Such bird-on-branch designs formed the core of Koson's collaboration with publishers Daikokuya, Matsuki Heikichi, and later Watanabe Shozaburo, who marketed his kacho-e to Western collectors during the early shin-hanga period. The bullfinch carries seasonal associations with late winter and early spring in Japanese visual tradition.
