Description
This is a variant of Koson's cockatoo and pomegranate composition, one of several published versions of a subject that proved popular with collectors. Differences between variants typically appear in palette adjustments, alternative bokashi gradations on the background, and revisions to the bird's posture or the arrangement of pomegranate fruit. Koson and his publishers, principally Watanabe Shozaburo and earlier Daikokuya, frequently reissued successful designs with modifications, sometimes carving new blocks and sometimes reprinting older blocks with altered color schemes. The cockatoo's white plumage continues to rely on the unprinted washi ground, while the pomegranate and foliage carry the chromatic weight of the image. Such repeated subjects are characteristic of Koson's commercial practice within the shin-hanga movement, where established compositions could be refreshed for new editions without the wholesale design work of an entirely new print. Comparing variants of this image reveals the workshop's approach to color experimentation within a fixed compositional framework.
