Description
This winter kacho-e shows an eagle perched on a snow-laden branch, a subject combining two of Koson's strongest interests, raptors and seasonal weather effects. Eagles permitted Koson to demonstrate detailed feather rendering through carefully registered overprinting, with the keyblock providing the structural drawing of beak, talons, and individual primary feathers. The snow on the branch and surrounding bough is achieved by leaving the washi unprinted in those areas, with subtle grey bokashi to suggest shadow beneath the snow mass. The eagle's fierce gaze and powerful stance reflect the hawk-and-eagle tradition in Japanese painting, where such birds carried associations with samurai virtues and New Year imagery. Koson's eagles, produced for both domestic and substantial export markets, found particular favor with American and European collectors during the early twentieth century. The print belongs to the larger group of winter-season kacho-e through which Koson explored compositional contrasts between dark plumage and white snow.
