Description
A paired composition of two white-fronted geese, almost certainly drawn from observation given Koson's careful rendering of the species' diagnostic features in his other goose prints. Pairing the birds allowed him to vary posture across a single design — one bird grazing or preening while the other stands alert, or one in profile against the other turned three-quarters — producing a quiet narrative without anecdote. The print would have been built from a keyblock defining contour and the principal plumage markings, supplemented by color blocks for the warm browns of the back, the pale belly, the orange feet and bill, and a separately printed bokashi ground. Koson's publishers, principally Daikokuya, Matsuki Heikichi, and later Watanabe Shozaburo, marketed such kacho-e to the Western export trade in the early twentieth century, which explains why so many Koson prints survive today in American and European museum collections rather than in Japan.
