Bera — ベラ

The Bera (wrasse; ベラ) encompasses dozens of colorful species across Japan's coastal waters, many prized as food fish despite their small size. Wrasses are among the most visually striking of Japan's reef-associated fish, their blues, greens, and pinks often surpassing tropical reef fish in intensity. Bakufu's print from "Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu" renders the wrasse with characteristic precision — the pattern of scales, the distinctive protruding lips, the ribbon-like fins — while situating it in the watery environment it inhabits.
