Farming

"Farming" depicts the seasonal rhythms of Japanese agricultural life — the labor of planting, tending, and harvesting that defined rural existence across Japan's centuries. Bakufu, though best known for his monumental fish series, was also a capable landscape and genre artist whose early work addressed the everyday scenes of Japanese countryside. This print reflects his observational approach: where he brought scientific precision to marine subjects, he brought an ethnographic attentiveness to rural labor.
