Description
The third variant within Ohno Bakufu's Type 1 chrysanthemum sequence, this print likely shares its underlying composition with the other variants in the group while differing in color palette, ground tone, or the arrangement of supporting foliage. Chrysanthemum prints in the shin-hanga and decorative woodblock tradition were frequently issued in multiple colorways to offer collectors distinct impressions from a single carved block set. Ohno's version would draw on the kacho-e genre's emphasis on seasonal botanical subjects rendered with precise linework and layered pigment. The blooms' tightly packed petals present a technical challenge well suited to woodblock — each ring of petals requires careful registration to convey depth and curvature. Against any variant background, the flowers read as formal studies of the flower's structure as much as decorative images.
