The Flounder (Karei; Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of Japan's most commercially important flatfish, prized for its delicate white flesh and featured in sashimi restaurants throughout the country. Its distinctively asymmetric form — both eyes migrating to one side during development, the body lying flat on the seafloor — presented Bakufu with an unusual compositional challenge that he resolved through careful rendering of the fish's characteristic flattened profile and the mottled camouflage of its upper surface.
