"Fukujuso and Stones" presents the pheasant's eye flower (Adonis ramosa; fukujuso), one of the first flowers of the Japanese year — blooming in January and February when snow may still be on the ground — arranged with natural stones in a composition inspired by the tradition of flower arrangement and rock study. The fukujuso is associated with good fortune and longevity, making it a popular New Year's subject in Japanese art. Bakufu's careful rendering of both flower and stone reflects the naturalist's eye he applied to all his subjects.
