Description
"Herons" depicts the graceful wading birds that are among the most frequently painted subjects in East Asian art — their long necks, dagger-like bills, and patient stillness at the water's edge making them natural subjects for the observation-based naturalism Bakufu practiced. The heron's hunting posture — stock-still, then explosively sudden — captured the same quality of patient precision that characterized Bakufu's own artistic method. In Japanese and Chinese painting, herons in water were among the canonical bird-and-flower subjects.
