The Kawahagi (filefish; カワハギ; Stephanolepis cirrhifer) is a distinctive Japanese coastal fish recognized by its rough, sandpaper-like skin (from which it takes its name — "skin stripper"), diamond-shaped profile, and the single locking spine on its dorsal fin. The kawahagi is prized as table fish, its firm white flesh used in sashimi and hot pot dishes. Bakufu's rendering in his fish compendium would have captured the species' unmistakable body shape and the subtle blue-grey and white tones of its skin.
