Description
The rainbow trout (ニジマス, nijimasu, Oncorhynchus mykiss), introduced to Japan from North America in the Meiji period, is depicted in this print from Ohno Bakufu's 'Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu' series. The fish's most distinctive feature — the pink to red lateral band running from gill to tail — posed an interesting challenge for the woodblock medium, requiring precise registration of a color band against the speckled silver-green body. Ohno renders the characteristic black spotting across the dorsal surface and fins with fine carving, and the adipose fin, a marker of the salmonid family, is carefully included. The composition likely presents the fish in lateral view, allowing the full length of the body and the characteristic markings to be read clearly.
