"Pomegranate and Persimmon" (Zakuro to kaki) presents two of autumn Japan's most characteristic fruits — the brilliant ruby-seeded pomegranate and the deep orange persimmon — in a still-life composition that extends Bakufu's natural history interests from marine to botanical subjects. Both fruits were painted frequently in Chinese and Japanese art for their auspicious associations: the pomegranate with abundance and fertility, the persimmon with joy and harvest. Bakufu's rendering emphasizes their rich autumnal color and the textural differences between the two fruits' surfaces.
