Description
Titled 'Rainbow Trout' in English but labeled ヤマメ in Japanese, this print presents a nomenclatural distinction worth noting: ヤマメ (yamame, Oncorhynchus masou masou) is technically the landlocked form of the cherry salmon, distinct from the rainbow trout (ニジマス) elsewhere in the series. The yamame is characterized by its oval parr marks along the lateral line and a subtly different body proportion than the rainbow trout. Ohno Bakufu's rendering in this 'Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu' print would capture the yamame's silvery body with muted olive-brown dorsal shading and the distinctive oval blotches. A salmonid of clear mountain streams, the yamame carried associations with pristine highland waters, lending this print a quality of cold, clean natural environments.
