Description

A second treatment of the saba (サバ), or mackerel, from Ohno Bakufu's Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu series, this print depicts one of Japan's most commercially important and visually striking food fish. The chub mackerel's defining visual features — the iridescent blue-green dorsal surface broken by dark wavy markings, transitioning sharply to a silver-white ventral surface — presented Ohno with a technically demanding subject requiring precise color block alignment to render the species' characteristic lateral contrast. This variant may differ from its paired print through the number of fish depicted, the orientation of the body, or subtle differences in the coloration of the background. Mackerel, known for their firm musculature and streamlined torpedo shape, lend themselves to dynamic diagonal compositions within the picture plane. Ohno's careful observation of the species' scale pattern and the delicate striping along the dorsal ridge required fine carving from the keyblock craftsmen to convey the fish's distinctive markings with accuracy.
