Description

The same (鮫), or shark, is among the most dramatic subjects in Ohno Bakufu's Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu series, requiring the artist to address a subject of significant scale and cultural weight in Japanese coastal life. Ohno's composition likely depicts the shark in strong lateral profile, the torpedo-shaped body filling the pictorial field to convey the animal's mass and predatory purpose. The characteristic features — the heterocercal caudal fin, the prominent pectoral fins, the pointed snout, and the rows of teeth visible in an open or slightly parted jaw — would each be rendered with the scientific accuracy that distinguishes the series. The shark's smooth, cartilaginous skin lacks the discrete scale texture of bony fish, requiring different carving and printing strategies: color gradients across the grey-blue dorsal surface and the white ventral surface are achieved through bokashi work rather than individual scale delineation. As one of the largest animals in the series, the shark print would have presented the craftsmen with challenges of maintaining compositional balance across the full oban format.
