Description
The Ugui (Japanese dace; ウグヒ; Tribolodon hakonensis) is a freshwater fish common in Japan's rivers and lakes, less celebrated as a food fish than many of its marine counterparts but ecologically significant as one of Japan's most widespread native species. The ugui's modest appearance — silvery, streamlined, unremarkable to the casual observer — made it a less prestigious subject for the naturalist than the brilliant tai or the dramatic fugu, but Bakufu's fish compendium was comprehensive in its ambitions, honoring every species with equal care.
