Description
This unidentified print—catalogued as one of several 'Unknown 8' impressions in the collection—presents a challenge of attribution within Ohno Bakufu's extensive output. The duplication of the 'Unknown 8' title across multiple slugs suggests these may be variant impressions of the same composition, impressions from related plates, or records created before full identification was possible. If from the 'Dai Nihon Gyorui Gashu' series, the print would follow the series' documentary approach: a single specimen rendered with morphological precision, isolated against a minimal ground, with the graduated bokashi and fine key-block cutting that characterize the series. The multiple impressions in the same title group may reflect different print runs, color variants, or the block degradation that occurs over long print runs, allowing comparison of impression quality across the set. Such variant states are of particular interest to scholars of the technical history of woodblock printing.
