Description
The second print in the First Love series develops the bijin-ga subject established in the opening composition, presenting a young woman whose expression or setting advances the understated narrative of emerging feeling. As a formally designated bijin-ga and portrait work, this print foregrounds the figure against a minimized or suggestive background, allowing close attention to facial modeling, hair arrangement, and kimono detail. The woodblock technique would have employed fine-line key-block carving for the figure's facial features, with flat and gradated color blocks building the textile patterns and skin tones across dampened washi. Flesh tones in the period tradition were often achieved through thin layers of pale pigment requiring precise baren control to avoid streaking. The serial placement suggests the relationship between subject and viewer is becoming more immediate, a development consistent with the overarching romantic theme.
