Description
This untitled woodblock print by Okumura Koichi, published by Unsodo, represents his characteristic engagement with Japanese landscape as a subject for atmospheric exploration. Okumura's known output ranges from snow-covered mountain villages to lakeside reflections to city scenes in rain or mist — subjects that placed heavy demands on the printer's ability to build soft tonal gradations through successive bokashi passes on damp washi. The shin-hanga movement to which he contributed emphasized this kind of atmospheric specificity, distinguishing itself from the bolder graphic conventions of earlier ukiyo-e landscape. Without identifying title information, the precise scene depicted here is uncertain, but the print would reflect Unsodo's high production standards and Okumura's characteristic restraint in composition and color palette.
