Description
This untitled Okumura Koichi woodblock print, produced through Unsodo's Kyoto workshop, cannot be identified by subject from title alone. Okumura's documented subjects include mountain villages under snow, temple gardens, coastal scenes, and forested slopes in multiple seasons — all subjects that called on his capacity to organize tonal gradation across a composition. His prints distinguish themselves within the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) movement through a relatively cool, understated palette that prioritizes mood over dramatic color contrasts. The technical demands of his designs — smooth graduated skies, subtly differentiated snow shadows, reflected light on water — required Unsodo's most experienced printers to execute multiple carefully registered blocks on absorbent [washi](/glossary/washi). This print reflects that collaborative craft regardless of its specific subject.
