"Lyrique No. 2: On Musical Themes — Ravel, Morning Song of a Pierrot" of 1933 translates Ravel's music for the commedia dell'arte character of the Pierrot into visual form — the sad clown's morning song rendered through abstract composition. Ravel's particular combination of clarity and melancholy, his cool emotional surface over genuine feeling, offered Onchi a musical personality well suited to visual translation: the Pierrot figure itself already abstract, a mask over a real face. This print from 1933 represents an early major statement in Onchi's music-to-image project.
