Description
This impression, the second in a sequence of three under the same title, reflects Onchi's practice of returning to a motif across multiple prints with formal variations. Such serial treatments were common in his oeuvre — the artist would explore the compositional possibilities of a single subject through repeated carving and printing, sometimes with substantially redesigned blocks, sometimes through changes in coloration or registration. Whether this version constitutes a different state from shared blocks or an independent composition under the same title cannot be determined from the title alone; both practices appear in his catalogue. The mokuhanga technique here, as in all Onchi's sosaku-hanga work, requires the artist to design, cut, and print himself, with the final print bearing visible traces of the hand at every stage. The title's repetition across multiple prints functions almost as a series mark — successive 'praises' of Fuji, each freshly conceived, suggest an ongoing engagement rather than a single definitive statement. Compared with shin-hanga's workshop-produced Fuji series, Onchi's serial returns read as personal artistic exercises rather than coordinated publication ventures.
