Description
"Mirror" likely depicts a still life arrangement built around a mirror — a recurring motif in Onchi's intimate domestic compositions. Onchi often translated everyday objects into semi-abstract studies of shape, reflection, and textured surface, exploiting the woodblock's capacity for layered tonal printing. Surfaces are typically built from overlapping color blocks rather than line-and-fill drawing, with the grain of the woodblock itself left visible as expressive texture. The reflective quality of a mirror gave Onchi an opportunity to investigate the contrast between a physical object and the doubled, distorted image it produces — a meditative subject suited to his sosaku-hanga philosophy. As a founding figure of the creative prints movement, Onchi rejected the traditional division of labor among designer, carver, and printer, instead carving and pulling each impression himself. Works such as this demonstrate his commitment to printmaking as a wholly autographic medium, where the impression bears the artist's direct touch on the block rather than the polish of a workshop production.
