Description
This portrait fragment focuses on the nape and shoulders of a male figure, a cropped compositional approach Onchi favored in his lyrical sosaku-hanga portraits. By isolating an unconventional anatomical detail rather than the face, the print transforms the human form into a study of contour, weight, and tonal modulation. Onchi typically worked such subjects through carefully registered blocks and graded bokashi inking on absorbent washi, allowing the wood grain itself to inflect the surface. The reduction of identifying features pushes the portrait toward abstraction — a recurring strategy in his post-1930 work, where he distilled human presence into rhythm and silhouette. As one of the founders of the sosaku-hanga movement, Onchi rejected the ukiyo-e collaborative system in favor of the artist as sole carver and printer. Works like this demonstrate the introspective, modernist sensibility he brought to the woodblock medium, treating the figure less as likeness than as form, mood, and the trace of the baren on paper.
