Description

"Vicinity of the British Embassy" presents an urban view from the diplomatic quarter of Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, where the British Embassy stands across the moat from the Imperial Palace. Onchi made repeated forays into the meisho-e (famous places) tradition throughout his career, but rendered Tokyo not as a celebratory tourist circuit but as a city of quiet, slightly melancholic moods. The print employs simplified architectural massing, restrained color, and the kind of soft atmospheric bokashi he used to suggest mist, dusk, or overcast weather. Trees, walls, and tiled roofs are reduced to flat planes, with attention paid to the negative spaces between them. The subject sits within Onchi's broader interest in modern Tokyo, a theme he addressed alongside collaborators like Hiratsuka Un'ichi in the Shin Tokyo Hyakkei (One Hundred New Views of Tokyo) series. As a self-printed sosaku-hanga work, it shows how he applied his hand-printed technique to documentary as well as abstract subjects.
