"Zoo in Early Fall" takes the zoo as an urban landscape subject in the specific atmospheric conditions of early autumn — when the heat of summer has begun to ease and the zoo's grounds take on the first notes of seasonal change in their plantings and in the quality of the afternoon light. Onchi's zoo subjects, which include the 1945 Ueno Zoo from the "Recollections" series, treat the zoo as a place where urban Japan and the natural world staged their most concentrated encounter, with all the complexity that relationship implied.
