From Binnie's Great Mirror of Heisei Actors series, this print depicts the legendary onnagata actor Bando Tamasaburo V in the role of the Heron Maiden (Sagi Musume) — one of the most technically demanding and visually spectacular roles in the kabuki repertoire. The Heron Maiden transforms through the performance from a white-clad spirit into a tortured figure, the actor's white costume and cerulean makeup creating one of kabuki's most striking visual images. Binnie captures Tamasaburo's celebrated transformation in the classic okubi-e (large-head portrait) format.
