Description
A steep stone stairway rises straight up the composition through a dense forest, flanked by tall tree trunks and stippled foliage rendered in mottled greens, grays, and black. Tiny white figures climb the steps in single file toward a small roofed shrine gate at the top, while a vermillion torii gate and fence mark the entrance at the bottom of the stairs. The palette is dominated by dark forest tones with textured, dotted patterning, set against the vermillion accents of the torii and a pale sky visible at the upper edge. Ray Morimura, "Steps to the Shrine," woodblock, 2013.
