$500–$5,000. Common Biblical prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Watanabe's warm, folk-art Biblical prints have a devoted collector base. Larger formats and earlier works command more.
Dated 1968, Mary and Elisabeth — the visitation scene from Luke's Gospel, when the pregnant Mary visits her older cousin Elisabeth who is carrying John the Baptist — is one of Scripture's most intimate meetings of expectation and fulfillment. Two women, each bearing a child of extraordinary destiny, greet each other; Elisabeth's child leaps in her womb at Mary's arrival. Watanabe's katazome rendering of this women-centered, pre-natal scene gives the two figures the same visual solidity and dignity as his male disciples and prophets.
