Description

Pentecost — the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples gathered in Jerusalem fifty days after the resurrection, experienced as tongues of fire and the gift of speaking in languages known to all nations — is among the most visually dramatic moments in the Acts of the Apostles. Watanabe's katazome rendering of this scene would deploy his warmest, most energetic colors: the gathered disciples, the flames above their heads, the sense of wind and transformation filling the room. The moment marks the beginning of the church's outward movement into the world.
