Description
Peter sinking — the moment in the walking-on-water story when Peter, having stepped out of the boat toward Jesus at Christ's invitation, begins to sink as his faith wavers and he sees the wind around him — is among the Gospel's most psychologically precise vignettes. The moment between confidence and fear, between the miraculous and the ordinary, is captured in Watanabe's katazome stencil: the figure half-submerged, the hand reaching toward the figure above the water, the sea both threatening and familiar.
