Description
Dated 1962, the Shepherd from early in Watanabe's career demonstrates the katazome stencil technique already applied with full assurance to a Biblical pastoral subject. The shepherd — the oldest and most universal image for divine care in the Biblical tradition — is rendered in the same bold, earthy tones as all his working figures: a man with sheep, carrying the staff, moving through landscape, his vocation ancient and his presence contemporary. The print stands as one of the foundational works of his Biblical print practice.
