Description
This print created for the College Women's Association of Japan Eleventh Annual Exhibition, preserved in the British Museum's collection and documented through [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e).org, demonstrates the breadth of Sadao Watanabe's engagement with institutional and civic life in postwar Japan. Watanabe (1913-1996), the most internationally recognized creator of Christian Japanese woodblock and stencil-dyed prints, frequently produced commissioned works for exhibitions, charitable causes, religious organizations, and cultural associations, applying his distinctive katazome technique to public-facing imagery as well as private devotional prints. The College Women's Association of Japan, founded in 1949 to support educational and cultural exchange for women graduates of American universities, held annual exhibitions that brought leading Japanese artists into dialogue with international audiences, and Watanabe's participation reflected his global stature. His mingei-influenced approach, learned from Living National Treasure Serizawa Keisuke and rooted in Yanagi Soetsu's folk craft philosophy, was particularly well suited to occasional and commemorative work because it valued accessibility, indigenous materials, and the integration of art into everyday life. Working on momigami, the kneaded mulberry paper whose textured surface gives his prints their characteristic weathered appearance, Watanabe used hand-cut stencils to layer natural dyes in flat, iconic compositions. Even his commissioned exhibition pieces typically drew on his biblical iconography, since his Christian faith and his artistic practice were inseparable throughout his life. The British Museum's holding of this exhibition print places it within one of the world's most comprehensive institutional collections of Japanese twentieth-century printmaking, where Watanabe is represented alongside other [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) and [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) artists of his generation.
