Description

Dated 1967, the Flight into Egypt — Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus departing Bethlehem for Egypt to escape Herod's massacre of the innocents — is rendered in the katazome stencil technique with ink and color on paper. The family's nocturnal journey, traditionally depicted in Western art with the donkey bearing mother and child while Joseph leads on foot, is given by Watanabe the calm, purposeful quality of the mingei tradition's human figures: people who have been called to a difficult thing and are doing it with quiet determination.
