$500–$5,000. Common Biblical prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Watanabe's warm, folk-art Biblical prints have a devoted collector base. Larger formats and earlier works command more.
Dated 1966, the Good News to the Shepherds — the angel's announcement of Christ's birth to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night — is one of Watanabe's most joyful subjects. The sudden appearance of the angel in the night sky, the shepherds' alarm and then their wonder, the proclamation "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men" — all are compressed into a single katazome composition in which the dark sky above and the lit figures below meet in the moment of announcement.
Curated cross-cuts that include this print.
