Description

Against a deep red ground, two tiers of stylized, bold-outlined figures with elongated white faces and dark almond eyes gather in mourning; upper left shows a robed woman being comforted by another figure near an arched gateway, while a bearded, haloed man at center right raises his hand toward them, flanked by somber attendants in dark robes. The lower register repeats the grouping motif with a haloed woman at left and more mourners at right, their patterned robes (checked browns and golds, striped blues, dotted florals) rendered in flat, angular shapes against black outlines. Sadao Watanabe, "Widow of Nain," 1973, katazome print on crumpled paper.
