Description
Mist rising from a river surface creates a natural veil that partially obscures the landscape beyond, and this mokuhanga print renders that phenomenon as a study in transparency and concealment. Living near the Kamo River in Kyoto and Lake Biwa to the east, Brayer has frequent access to river environments where morning mist transforms the waterscape. The print likely layers pale, translucent washes over hints of darker forms beneath, mimicking the visual experience of peering through river fog. Mokuhanga is uniquely suited to this subject because its water-based inks on damp washi produce the same kind of soft-edged diffusion that mist creates in nature. The result is a print where the paper's own luminosity glows through the pigment layers, standing in for the diffused sunlight that penetrates river mist.
